A Bill to Curb Demand

“I am only one, but I am one. I can’t do everything, but I can do something. The something I ought to do, I can do. And by the grace of God, I will.”
– E. Hale

You may remember the amazing breakthrough our legal reform team wrote about a few months ago regarding the Capitol Hill screening of Nefarious in July 2013 and the corresponding meetings with members of the United States Congress. The momentum that started with that screening, hosted by Representative Randy Hultgren (R-IL), has not stopped! Today, we are excited to announce that Congressman Hultgren has officially sponsored a bill inspired by Nefarious and the proposal presented by our legal reform team last summer. The bill was introduced on May, 21, 2014 as H.R. 4703, and the press is already talking about the possible worldwide impact of this legislation.

The goal of H.R 4703 will be to ensure that the United States government is doing all it can to guarantee that nations around the world are taking concrete steps to reduce the demand for commercial sex. The bill is based on years of compiled evidence, case studies, and credible research indicating that sex trafficking increases in countries where the purchase of sex is legal. The bill will specify simple and straightforward criteria to determine whether or not countries are making serious efforts to reduce the demand for sex trafficking victims. Countries with legalized prostitution will be appropriately identified and ranked in our government’s annual Trafficking in Person’s Report. This report is taken very seriously by nations around the world, and lower rankings involve serious consequences. If applied correctly, this bill could have a great deal of global influence.

Thank you for your prayers and your correspondence urging representatives to attend the screening of Nefarious last summer. Your efforts helped lay the groundwork for this critical legislation. Now, YOU can help make history by encouraging your representatives to support this important bill.

Here is a sample script you can use when contacting your representative:

“Congressman/Congresswoman _______,

My name is ______, and I am a citizen in your district. I am contacting you because I strongly support bill H.R. 4703. The bill sponsored by Congressman Randy Hultgren and Congressman Chris Smith is critical to the prevention of sex trafficking around the globe. It will work to reduce sex trafficking by amending the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 to include a simple and straightforward test to determine whether or not countries around the world are serious in their efforts to reduce the demand for victims of sex trafficking. I would like you to consider co-sponsoring H.R. 4703 and would appreciate your vote in favor of it when the time comes.

Thank you for your service.
