Our founder, Benjamin Nolot, recently had a deeply sobering dream, which he posted to social media soon afterwards. Through the overwhelmingly positive response and widespread exposure it has received, it’s clear that the message of the dream is really resonating with a lot of people. As such, we wanted to share it with our Exodus Cry community.
In sharing this dream we aren’t attempting to make any claims about ourselves or anyone in the abolition movement. We also aren’t attempting to make any judgements against any person or entity in the Body of Christ. We are simply sharing it as it was received, and each of you can decide if it has any insight or inspiration for you on your journey.
“I had an intense dream last night. Two ships from the 1700-1800s period were passing each other in a harbor going in opposite directions. I knew that one ship was representative of the Church and the other was representative of the abolition movement. I was on the abolition ship and as I watched the Church ship pass by I saw people were having a banquet and enjoying music.
On the abolition ship people’s faces were battle tested, focused, and determined. They looked like they were ready for war. Suddenly, as if compelled by force, I began to yell over to the Church ship at the top of my lungs “If we have a private faith that does not act in the face of oppression, it is no faith at all! If we have a private faith that does not act in the face of oppression, it is no faith at all!” I yelled this over and over as they passed by.
When I woke up I looked up this phrase and discovered that it is a quote from William Wilberforce.
Still processing this dream because it hit me really hard. Any interpretations?”
Our prayer is that believers across the world will be united with Jesus and the mission statement He shared in His first sermon:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19 NIV)
